Red Hook Responds (RHR) is a dynamic, volunteer-driven organization that grew out of an all-embracing community response to the upheaval and isolation of the Covid-19 crisis. RHR’s volunteers and board members work together to ensure daily food security for individuals and families living in Northern Dutchess County, as encompassed in the Red Hook and Rhinebeck school districts. RHR’s volunteer base, drawn from student, professional and retired community members, reflects a deeply shared ethos to reduce food insecurity, reinforce community bonds and grow the strength and connectedness of the communities they live in.
Executive Director
Part-time $30 (25 hrs. per week)
Job Summary
The Executive Director is the key management leader of Red Hook Responds (RHR). The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the planning, organization, and direction of all RHR’s operations and programs. Other key duties include fundraising, development, financial management, administration, marketing, and community relations. Most importantly, this role leads RHR in embodying its core values in serving the community while advancing the vision, mission, and strategic direction of this 99% volunteer organization.

Supported by: Volunteer Coordinator/Executive Chef
Responsibilities
- Leadership & Management
- Ensure excellence of RHR services: rigorous service evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and software systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals.
- Oversee existing operations, including planning, goal setting, and implementation.
- Actively engage and energize responders/volunteers, board members, committees,
- partnering organizations, and funders.
- Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors and any committees; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for both ongoing local operations as well as for regional collaborations.
- Lead, coach, develop, and support Red Hook Responds volunteer operations supervisors
- and shift leaders.
- Ensure readiness to launch new help services in emergencies and as needed to support the Red Hook Responds mission pending Board approval.
Fundraising & Communications
- Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing operations and expansion goals, including overseeing fundraising activities in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
- Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities for fundraising.
Planning & New Business
- Retain and build partnerships in neighboring communities, establishing relationships with the funders, and political, community and nonprofit leaders and organizations in each community.
Operations, Mission and Organizational Protection
- Monitor and manage all software systems and subscriptions including helpline phone, email, and web page.
- Establish a maintenance schedule and check list for all facilities or equipment assets that Red Hook Responds rents or owns.
- Secure, update, and retain all operational and office documents in cloud storage with direct access from the board of directors or specified officers of the board or volunteers. Agree that all work done or published is the property of Red Hook Responds Incorporated for the good of its mission and not that of any person or director (confidentiality/non-compete type agreement may apply)
Qualifications
The ED will be thoroughly committed to the mission of Red Hook Responds. All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience.
Specific requirements include:
- College degree preferred; significant experience in business/nonprofit administration without a degree will also be considered; experience in predominantly volunteer organizations is especially helpful.
- Minimum four years of management experience; candidate should possess a track record of effectively leading, scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have improved an organization.
- Commitment to ensuring quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
- Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach volunteers; manage, and develop teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
- Proven success working with a Board of Directors or management team with the ability to cultivate board member relationships.
- Marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
- Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
- Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
- Ability to help meal prep or equipment set up for holidays, fund-raising events, and other organization events.
- Position is 25 hours per week with flexible scheduling within the needs of the organization; requires own transportation (reimbursement of travel/gas expenses), valid driver’s license, strong communication skills, team player, people skills, flexible and organized. Should be comfortable using computers and mobile devices for communication, including email, chat, video calling etc. (Experience preferred with Google Drive Suite and internal communications & tasking software such as RingCentral, Slack, or Microsoft Teams). Ability to help with meal prep or equipment set up for holidays, fund-raising events, and other organization activities.

Volunteer Coordinator
Part-Time – $21 (15 hours per week)
Reports To: Executive Director
The strength of RHR is the use of volunteers to accomplish much of the mission. RHR is committed to energizing the community to support all residents who struggle in some way to live comfortably in our communities. This position is:
- Responsible for recruiting volunteers & volunteer groups, when necessary, to meet the organization’s needs:
- Utilizes all available forms of communication.
Responds to all volunteer inquiries received via telephone, electronically or in
person. - Responds to all volunteer applications received electronically or in person.
- Interviews, if necessary, and vets potential volunteers & volunteer groups
- Motivates potential volunteers & volunteer groups.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with volunteers & volunteer groups.
- Secures volunteers & volunteer groups to meet the organization’s needs.
- Coordinates all volunteers & volunteer groups.
- Provides verification letters to volunteers, if necessary
- Maintains file of volunteer applications
- Maintains database of volunteers & volunteer groups
- Maintains accurate records of volunteer hours.
- Utilizes all available forms of communication.
- Responsible for appropriate placement of volunteers that meet both the organizations and volunteer’s needs:
- Develops, schedules, and provides orientation/training plan.
- Maintains monthly, detailed calendar software for scheduling & proper placement of volunteers & volunteer groups
- Regular visits to various programs to ensure that organization’s needs are met by volunteers and/or volunteer groups.
- Regularly meetings with ED to ensure that program’s needs are met by volunteers and/or volunteer groups.
- Follow-up with volunteers and/or volunteer groups after placement for additional feedback opportunities
- Annually, plans and executes the appropriate forms of a volunteer appreciation.
- Provides input to Annual Report (Volunteer stats and hours for various programs, volunteer stats and hours for the year)
- Responsible for other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
